The Orlando Magic are saying goodbye to a familiar face in their front office. After 12 years with the organization, assistant general manager Stephen Mervis is heading to the Windy City. The Chicago Bulls are finalizing a deal to bring Mervis on board as their new senior vice president of basketball operations, working under recently hired executive vice president Bryson Graham.
A Winter Haven native, Mervis has been a steady presence in Orlando since 2012. He was promoted to assistant general manager in July 2024, where he took on a wide range of responsibilities. According to the team, his role included overseeing salary cap management, strategic planning, and collective bargaining agreement matters. He also played a key part in the Magic's scouting department, helping to evaluate both amateur and professional talent.
This move comes as the Bulls undergo a major front-office shakeup. With just one week left in the regular season, Chicago parted ways with executive vice president Artūras Karnišovas and general manager Marc Eversley. Their six-year tenure saw the Bulls make the playoffs only once, prompting a fresh start. Graham, who spent 15 seasons with the New Orleans Pelicans before a year with the Atlanta Hawks, was hired to lead the rebuild on May 4.
Both the Bulls and Magic are also in the market for new head coaches. Orlando recently dismissed Jamahl Mosley after five seasons, while Chicago's Billy Donovan stepped down in April, choosing not to work with the new front office. In addition to Mervis, the Bulls are reportedly bringing in Nets executive Acie Law as vice president of player personnel.
For Magic fans, Mervis's departure marks the end of an era—but it's also a reminder of how the league's front-office chess game never stops. Whether you're tracking trades or just love the game, change is always part of the playbook.
