Lakeland Christian girls basketball is turning the page on an era. After leading the program for nearly two decades, head coach Mike Carl has stepped down, concluding a memorable 18-year tenure that was defined by postseason runs and profound life lessons.
The decision came following the team's regional quarterfinal game against John Carroll Catholic. Carl has accepted a new position as the Athletic Director at Lakes Academy, with his start date set for July 1. He informed the school and held a team meeting shortly after the season's end to share the news.
In a heartfelt reflection, Carl expressed his deep connection to the school. "Lakeland Christian will always be very special to me," he said. "I was blessed to coach for 18 seasons... My wife teaches music at LCS, and both of our daughters graduated from LCS. We have strong relationships here." He emphasized that his core mission was always to use basketball as a tool to teach life lessons and foster spiritual growth.
The path to this decision began to form a couple of years ago, following a profound personal loss. The passing of his brother, Brent, to cancer in August 2023 prompted Carl to deeply reflect on his future and family. With four more grandchildren enriching his life, the desire for more time with family became a powerful motivator for change.
Carl's extensive career in sports education spans over 30 years. Before his storied run at Lakeland Christian, he built his foundation in New York, serving as Athletic Director at Ross Corners Christian Academy and later as the varsity boys basketball coach and AD at Timothy Christian School. His departure marks the end of a significant chapter for Lakeland Christian basketball, leaving behind a legacy built on more than just wins and losses.
