It's contract extension season in the NHL, and one former Boston Bruin just landed a deal that's turning heads across the league.

Charlie Coyle, the longtime center who was part of Boston's veteran exodus during a tough 2024-25 campaign, has officially secured a massive payday with his new club. After being traded to the Colorado Avalanche in a bid for Stanley Cup glory, Coyle's stint in Denver ended sooner than hoped—a first-round exit following a heartbreaking Game 7 loss to the Dallas Stars. The Avalanche chose not to re-sign him, leaving the 32-year-old to find a fresh start.

That fresh start came with the Columbus Blue Jackets, and Coyle made the most of it. Playing all 82 games this season, he racked up 58 points—just one shy of 2023 third overall pick Adam Fantilli. Coyle also led the Blue Jackets in faceoff wins and power-play goals, proving he still has plenty of gas in the tank. While Columbus ultimately missed the playoffs, Coyle's impact was undeniable, and the organization took notice.

Now, the Blue Jackets have locked him up for the long haul. The team announced a six-year, $36 million contract extension that will keep Coyle in Columbus through the 2031-32 season. With a $6 million average annual value, this deal represents a $750,000 raise from the six-year, $31.5 million contract he originally signed with Boston back in 2020.

For fans who watched Coyle grind through the highs and lows in Boston, this is a well-earned reward. It's a reminder that perseverance pays off—and that a change of scenery can sometimes lead to the biggest victory of all.
