The future of college football is already taking shape, and the Texas Longhorns are making sure they don't get left behind. Even though the 2028 season is still more than a year away, the Longhorns are already planting their flag in the recruiting landscape. On Monday, they extended a scholarship offer to Nehemiah McCary, the nation's No. 1 linebacker in the 2028 class.
McCary, a four-star prospect, is quickly becoming one of the most sought-after young athletes in the country. According to 247Sports, he's ranked as the top player from Alabama and the 27th-best player nationally in his class. That kind of pedigree naturally draws attention, and Texas is wasting no time making its interest known.
The Maplesville High School standout has already built an impressive list of suitors. Over the past few months, offers have rolled in from powerhouse programs like Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Miami, and Ohio State. And with his stock only rising, that list is expected to grow even longer.
McCary isn't just a name on a list—he's a proven playmaker on both sides of the ball. During the 2024 season, he rushed for 1,092 yards on 179 carries and added 80 receiving yards on 11 catches. But it's on defense where most scouts see his future. He racked up 26 tackles and an interception, showing the kind of disruptive ability that makes offensive coordinators lose sleep.
While he's also a standout on the track—his 4x100 relay team recently advanced to the AHSAA Finals—football remains his primary focus. As McCary continues to evaluate his options, the Longhorns are making an early push for a player who could become a cornerstone of their defense. If his trajectory continues, Texas fans might be hearing his name for years to come.
