Matthew Screech is on the verge of rugby league history. The Dragons lock has inked a new multi-year deal with the Rodney Parade club, putting him within striking distance of the all-time appearance record.
The 33-year-old veteran has already racked up 212 games across two spells with the Dragons—a tally that only Lewis Evans (236) has bettered. For a player who once hoped for just a single game, this milestone is nothing short of remarkable.
"I remember hoping for one game for the Dragons during a pre-season trial," Screech recalled. "To now have played over 200 and be second in the appearance chart is something I'm immensely proud of and very grateful for."
Screech first earned his shot with the Dragons in 2013 after impressing with Bedwas. After a season with Cardiff in 2021-22, he returned to Rodney Parade for what will now be his 13th campaign. He'll compete with captain Ben Carter, Levi Douglas, Seb Davies, and rising star Nick Thomas for game time in the second row.
Head coach Filo Tiatia is thrilled to keep his experienced lock in the fold. "He is now fully fit and against Zebre recently he showed what he is all about when he whacked guys, accelerated into contact and won us lineout and set-piece," Tiatia said.
But the good news doesn't stop there. The Dragons have also secured promising hooker Oli Burrows on fresh terms. The 23-year-old from Neath joined from Exeter in 2024 and has already made 12 appearances this season, scoring five tries.
Burrows stepped up impressively when Wales internationals Elliot Dee and Brodie Coghlan were sidelined with injuries. Forwards coach Sam Hobbs has high hopes for the young hooker. "He's got a very high ceiling and huge potential. We think he can play URC and beyond into international rugby," Hobbs said.
With Screech chasing history and Burrows pushing for higher honors, the Dragons' future—and their set-piece—looks in safe hands.
