A powerful family legacy is being forged in the Scottish Highlands. Stuart Whyte, a 45-year-old former world champion strongman from Lochaber, and his eight-year-old son Konnan have both etched their names into the record books at a national competition, proving that strength truly runs in the family.
The duo competed at the World Deadlift Council's Scottish championship in Clydebank, where each delivered awe-inspiring performances. Stuart, who owns his own gym, showcased his veteran prowess in the masters class. He set not one, but two new Scottish records, pulling 385-405kg in the Silverdollar Deadlift and 330kg in the Trap Bar Deadlift.
But the day's most heartwarming story belonged to his young son, Konnan. Competing for the very first time, the eight-year-old displayed remarkable poise and power, successfully lifting 60, 70, and 75kg to claim a joint Scottish record for his age group.
For Stuart, a seasoned athlete from Caol near Fort William, his own records were secondary to the pride he felt watching his son. "It was an amazing feeling as a parent, a really proud moment," he said. "To lift as an individual—you don't have people to rely on. It takes a lot of guts and determination."
Beyond the trophies and records, Stuart sees strongman as a powerful tool for community and wellbeing. He's actively involved with a local mental health charity, Ewen's Room, through the sport and is helping to organize events like the upcoming Glengarry Highland Games, which will feature novice and children's competitions.
This story is a fantastic reminder that the foundation of any great athletic journey is often built on passion, support, and a shared love for the challenge. As Konnan continues to excel in rugby and shinty, his strongman debut suggests a bright future, potentially following in the formidable footsteps of his champion father.
