Local NBA announcer rankings: Rockets blast up six spots, again

For a second straight year, Space City Home Network’s Rockets crew rose six spots in an annual poll ranking NBA broadcast teams.

The Houston Rockets' broadcast team is on a remarkable winning streak of their own — and it has nothing to do with the final score. For the second consecutive year, the Space City Home Network crew has surged six spots in Awful Announcing's annual reader poll ranking NBA regional broadcast teams, climbing to No. 11 out of 30 franchises.

This steady ascent mirrors the team's on-court resurgence. After four losing seasons to start the decade, the Rockets went 52-30 and made the playoffs in each of the last two years. Now, the viewing experience is catching up to the performance on the hardwood.

The broadcast's transformation began with key personnel changes. Before the 2021-22 season, Ryan Hollins took over as analyst alongside veteran play-by-play voice Craig Ackerman. Vanessa Richardson joined as courtside reporter prior to the 2022-23 campaign. With a few seasons of continuity under their belts, the chemistry is now undeniable.

Readers in the poll praised the crew for finding "a great rhythm," with Richardson earning special recognition as "widely considered the best sideline reporter in the game." Fans also appreciated the team's balanced approach — "very passionate" yet "without losing their objectivity," as one voter put it, calling them "the perfect combination of hometown love and reasonable objectivity."

The growth trajectory is especially impressive. Just two years ago, after the 2023-24 season, the Rockets ranked 23rd. They jumped to 17th in 2024-25, and now sit comfortably at 11th for 2025-26. Meanwhile, the top and bottom of the rankings have stayed largely static: the New York Knicks' crew, led by Mike Breen, has held the No. 1 spot for three straight years.

For Rockets fans, the message is clear: whether it's the team's young core or the voices calling the action, Houston is on the rise.
