The UNM Lobos are heating up at just the right time, storming into their first postseason appearance in two decades with a sweep that has fans buzzing. After a dominant weekend against Utah State, the Lobos have secured the No. 4 seed in the Mountain West softball tournament—marking their first trip to the event since 2006 and guaranteeing their first .500 or better season since 2015.
Saturday's series finale was a pitchers' duel for the ages. McKenna Guest, Arianna Capek, and Mountain West strikeout leader Caitlin Benningfield combined to hold Utah State to just one run, leading the Lobos to a 3-1 victory at Lobo Softball Field. It was the perfect cap to a weekend that saw UNM outscore the Aggies 12-6 on Thursday and 11-3 in a five-inning run-rule on Friday.
The Lobos now sit at 26-25 overall and 13-12 in conference play as they head to Reno for the Credit Union 1 MW Softball Championship. They'll face No. 5 Fresno State in a single-elimination first-round game before entering the double-elimination portion of the bracket.
Junior centerfielder Hayden Luderer provided the highlight of the weekend—both with her glove and her bat. In the fourth inning, she robbed what looked like a sure home run by leaping over the centerfield wall to make the catch. Then in the sixth, she launched her own bomb over the same wall, clearing it by a good 10 feet to seal the win. Talk about a player who's the pitcher's best friend.
“We’re ready to play anybody,” said fourth-year head coach Nicole Orgeron after Friday's win. “We still have good softball in front of us.”
With momentum on their side and a team that's clicking at the perfect time, the Lobos are proving that sometimes, a 20-year wait is worth it. Whether you're a fan of the Lobos or just love a good underdog story, this team is one to watch in the postseason.
