Liverpool's decision to substitute Rio Ngumoha against Chelsea may have been driven by a minor muscle concern, but the reaction from the Anfield crowd told a much bigger story. The 17-year-old's early exit sparked a wave of frustration among fans, and that says everything about how quickly he's earned their trust during a challenging season.

As the club prepares for life after Mohamed Salah, the big question is no longer about who to sign—it's about whether the answer is already at Anfield. Former Arsenal and Manchester City defender Bacary Sagna certainly thinks so. In an interview with Oddschecker, Sagna dismissed the idea of chasing Michael Olise as Salah's successor and instead backed Ngumoha to step up.

"If I had to choose someone to replace Salah at Liverpool, I would not buy someone special," Sagna said. "I would give my confidence to Rio Ngumoha, and I would start him regularly. I think he's ready to play regular games and to finally start his career. That's probably why Liverpool are not scared to let Mo Salah go—because they know they have someone special in Rio, and he's been proving he's a great player."

That's a massive vote of confidence for a teenager who only joined from Chelsea in September 2024. Yet it mirrors what many Liverpool supporters are beginning to feel. Ngumoha is still raw, and there will be games where the England youth international drifts in and out. But his confidence, his willingness to carry the ball, and his readiness to take responsibility make him one of the most exciting prospects in the club's future.

Head coach Arne Slot acknowledged the fan reaction after the draw with Chelsea, saying: "I knew this would be the reaction because he is such a good player." Former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock offered a slightly different take, admitting he understood the substitution but noting how much the crowd wanted to see more of the teenager.

Whether Ngumoha becomes the long-term answer on the right wing remains to be seen. But if the buzz around Anfield is anything to go by, Liverpool may already have their ready-made Salah replacement—and he's been right under their nose all along.
