Liverpool are reportedly leaving no stone unturned in their search for a potential new manager, with the club making discreet inquiries to Real Madrid about one of their own legends: Xabi Alonso.

The Reds have endured a rocky title defense in the Premier League, and the atmosphere at Anfield turned sour during Saturday's draw with Chelsea, where loud boos greeted head coach Arne Slot. With mounting pressure, Liverpool's board is now weighing all options—and Alonso's name has emerged as a leading candidate.

Alonso, 44, has been without a club since a short-lived spell at Real Madrid earlier this season, where he lasted less than eight months in charge. Despite the abrupt end, he carries a reputation as one of Europe's brightest young coaches, having guided Bayer Leverkusen to an unbeaten Bundesliga title in 2023/24—a historic achievement that put him on the radar of top clubs across the continent.

The Spanish midfielder's legendary status at Liverpool from his playing days makes him a natural fan favorite for the managerial role. However, Chelsea are also reportedly exploring a move for him, adding to the competition.

According to Spanish outlet AS, Liverpool officials have contacted Real Madrid to get the full picture on Alonso's sudden exit from the Bernabeu in January. The club wants to clear up any "doubts" about the circumstances surrounding his departure. Reports from BBC Sport at the time suggested that Alonso clashed with star forward Kylian Mbappe over tactics and also had a disagreement with club president Florentino Perez before the decision was made to part ways.

For now, Liverpool are doing their homework—reaching out to Madrid for the inside track on a man who could soon return to Anfield, this time in the dugout.
