Lisandro Martinez remains fully committed to Manchester United despite ongoing speculation about a potential return to his boyhood club, Newell's Old Boys. The Argentine defender has been a vital presence at Old Trafford since arriving under former manager Erik ten Hag, but his journey this season has been anything but smooth.
Injuries have plagued the 28-year-old throughout the campaign, limiting him to just 17 appearances across all competitions—only 12 of which were starts. A ruptured ACL suffered in February of last year kept him sidelined for much of the first half of the season, and a recent calf issue has further disrupted his rhythm. Even after returning to action, a straight red card in the 2-1 defeat against Leeds added to the frustration.
Despite these setbacks, Martinez has shown why he is considered one of the Premier League's finest defenders when fit. His exceptional ball-playing ability, sharp reading of the game, and aggressive defending have made him indispensable—first under Ten Hag, then under Ruben Amorim's 3-4-3 system, and now under caretaker manager Michael Carrick, who has since reverted to a back four.
Martinez played every minute of Carrick's first five matches in charge, helping United secure four wins and a draw. That hot streak highlighted just how crucial he is to the side's defensive stability. However, with Matthijs de Ligt also sidelined since December with a back injury, the club has had to get creative—most notably fielding an unorthodox centre-back pairing of Noussair Mazraoui and Ayden Heaven in a gritty 1-0 win over Chelsea.
With his contract entering its final year this summer, questions about Martinez's future have naturally surfaced. However, speaking recently, the Argentine made his stance clear: he is focused on his current club and has no immediate plans to leave. While a return to Newell's Old Boys remains a sentimental possibility down the line, for now, Martinez is determined to fight for his place at Old Trafford and help United finish the season strong.
