The Detroit Lions, under General Manager Brad Holmes, have developed a distinct draft philosophy that doesn't shy away from high-ceiling talent, even when that talent is coming off a significant injury. This approach has become a hallmark of Holmes's tenure, signaling a front office confident in modern medical rehabilitation and long-term player development.
This strategy was on full display when Holmes traded up to select receiver Jameson Williams in 2022, mere months after Williams tore his ACL. The trend continued with picks like defensive lineman Levi Onwuzurike, cornerback Ennis Rakestraw Jr., and most recently, quarterback Hendon Hooker in the 2023 third round—another player recovering from a torn ACL.
Holmes emphasizes a case-by-case evaluation, weighing the nature of the injury and the player's overall medical history. "You’ve just got to feel good about it," Holmes stated in a recent pre-draft press conference, pointing to the advancements in sports medicine as a key factor in their comfort level with such decisions.
Now, as the 2025 NFL Draft approaches, this philosophy could guide the Lions' first-round pick. NFL Network's Daniel Jeremiah has linked Detroit to Tennessee cornerback Jermod McCoy, a top-tier prospect who missed the entire 2025 season after tearing his ACL in an offseason workout.
Despite the injury, McCoy's on-field pedigree is impressive. In his lone season at Tennessee in 2024, he was a second-team All-SEC selection, racking up four interceptions and nine pass breakups. His ball-hawking skills were also evident during his freshman year at Oregon State. If available at pick No. 17, McCoy represents the exact type of high-risk, high-reward talent the Lions have shown a willingness to bet on, potentially adding a dynamic playmaker to a secondary on the rise.
