The roar of the crowd at the Pat Lipira Softball Complex was deafening as the Missouri Southern State Lions mounted a comeback for the ages in their NCAA Division II Central Region opener. Down but never out, the top-seeded Lions (49-7) clawed back from a late deficit to defeat No. 8 Augustana University 6-5, advancing to the winner's side of the bracket in dramatic fashion.
The turning point came in the bottom of the fifth inning, with the Lions trailing 5-4. Carsen Tinkler sparked the rally with a one-out double, setting the stage for Emily Perry to follow with a hard-hit single through the left side. Perry's heads-up baserunning, stealing second base, put the Lions in prime scoring position. Maddie Rolfs then delivered a clutch fly ball to deep center field, scoring Tinkler to tie the game at 5-5. The very next batter, Avery Sue Davis, crushed a pitch off the center field fence, driving in Perry and giving Missouri Southern a lead they would never relinquish.
"I think it might have been different had we not been in those situations in the regular season," said MSSU head coach Hallie Blackney. "We know how to fight. We talk about throwing punches. We might get punched, but we're gonna punch back."
The Lions' resilience was tested early, as Augustana's freshman pitcher Teya Speltz battled through four defensive errors by her team in the first three innings. Missouri Southern capitalized, scoring four runs—three unearned—including a two-run double from Perry in the first. But the Vikings (30-27) refused to back down. Speltz, showing poise beyond her years, launched a no-doubt, three-run home run in the top of the fifth to tie the game at 4-4. Augustana then took the lead on an infield single, chasing MSSU reliever Emily Davis and forcing starter Kiki Pickens back into the circle.
"Teya's really starting to come along," said Augustana head coach Gretta Melsted. "For a little freshman to have a lot of pressure on her... I think that says a lot about her. Missouri Southern's just a really good hitting team. They're really solid all around."
Despite the Vikings' rally, the Lions' championship pedigree shone through. With the win, Missouri Southern advances in the winner's bracket, proving once again that in softball, it's not about how you start—it's about how you finish. For fans of the game, this was a masterclass in composure, teamwork, and the never-say-die attitude that defines postseason softball at its finest.
