When opponents see the green and gold of Missouri Southern State University on the softball diamond, their game plan starts and ends with one name: Katie Gray. The evidence is in the numbers—36 walks drawn and 11 hit-by-pitches, totaling 47 plate appearances where the bat is practically taken out of her hands. That's a testament to the fear she instills in every MIAA pitcher.

But here's the thing about elite offenses: when one star gets neutralized, others step up. Gray's RBI count is down 25 from last year, a direct result of those limited opportunities. Yet her batting average sits just three points shy of last season's career-best .371, while her slugging percentage has skyrocketed nearly 100 points to .827 and her on-base percentage sits at an impressive .530. She's on base more than ever, but driving in fewer runs—and that's exactly where the supporting cast enters the spotlight.

Enter Carsen Tinkler, the senior third baseman who has transformed into a force at the plate. With a career-best .370 batting average, 146 at-bats (also a career high), and 16 walks, Tinkler has become the engine that keeps the Lions' offense humming. Her 54 hits represent a 42% increase from her previous best of 38 in 2024, and she's still got the postseason ahead.

"Honestly, I feel like the growth really happened the latter half of last year," said MSSU head coach Hallie Blackney. "No one outworks Carsen Tinkler. She puts the work in every single day. Postseason last year, she started handling pitches up and in."

The results speak for themselves. Tinkler's on-base percentage has climbed every season, jumping from .346 last year to .431 this year. She's scored a career-high 23 runs, surpassing the 20 she tallied in 2024. Her slugging percentage has nearly doubled from a year ago, sitting at .562, powered by seven home runs—five more than last season. Those numbers rank her fifth in OBP, fourth in slugging, second in home runs (behind Gray), and third in both RBIs (33) and hits (54) on the team.

"To be honest, I didn't coach her well, in my opinion, until this year," Blackney admitted, a testament to the senior's relentless work ethic and the coaching staff's commitment to maximizing her strengths while shoring up her weaknesses.

The result? A 45-7 overall record and a team that enters the MIAA Tournament as a legitimate contender. The Lions open postseason play Thursday at 11 a.m. against either No. 8 Washburn or No. 9 Missouri Western. With Gray drawing all the attention and Tinkler delivering the blows, Missouri Southern's offense has become a two-headed monster that opposing pitchers simply can't tame.
