With the 2026 NFL Draft now less than two weeks away, the rumor mill is heating up, and the Detroit Lions' strategy is coming into focus. According to the latest intel from ESPN's Eric Woodyard and Matt Miller, the Lions' first-round pick at No. 17 is far from a foregone conclusion.

While many assumed the release of veteran tackle Taylor Decker would lock Detroit into selecting an offensive tackle early, ESPN reports the Lions are "equally high" on addressing their pass rush. This shift in perspective makes strategic sense. In free agency, the Lions aggressively revamped their offensive interior by adding center Cade Mays, lineman Larry Borom, and guard Ben Bartch.

That offensive line investment could free them up to target a game-changing defensive playmaker in the first round. As Eric Woodyard notes, pairing a young, dynamic edge rusher with Pro Bowler Aidan Hutchinson is a "top priority," especially after losing breakout contributor Al-Quadin Muhammad to Tampa Bay.

With only two selections in the top 117 picks, the Lions are expected to use their first two choices on a tackle and an edge rusher, in some order. Whether they choose to bolster the offensive line or supercharge the defensive front at No. 17, the other pressing need will likely be addressed with their second-round pick at No. 50.

For a Lions defense looking to take the next step, adding a premier talent opposite Hutchinson could be the key to unleashing a dominant pass rush, making the edge rusher position a compelling and very real option when Detroit is on the clock.
