In a dramatic Friday doubleheader that showcased the resilience of a top-ranked team, the No. 11 Missouri Southern Lions (37-7, 12-4) split a pair of hard-fought games with the University of Central Missouri Jennies (29-13, 12-6) at Pat Lipira Field. After a tough loss in the opener, the Lions delivered a classic walk-off victory to salvage the day.
The first game was a back-and-forth battle. Central Missouri built an early 4-0 lead, but the Lions clawed back, highlighted by a Katie Gray home run that drove in Taylor Nuckolls. Despite a valiant effort, including two RBI sacrifice flies from Nuckolls, Southern couldn't complete the comeback, falling 7-5.
Game 2, however, was a different story. The Lions took an early lead, but the Jennies surged ahead 3-2 in the sixth inning. Undeterred, Emily Perry immediately answered with a clutch solo homer to tie the game, setting the stage for a thrilling finish. In the bottom of the seventh, with two outs, Maddie Rolfs delivered the game-winning single, scoring Daniella Guiterrez to secure a 4-3 walk-off win and send the home crowd into a frenzy.
Pitcher Kiki Pickens embodied the team's bounce-back spirit, shaking off a loss in Game 1 to earn the win in relief in Game 2, throwing 1.2 innings of perfect, hitless ball with three strikeouts.
The Lions will look to carry this momentum into their senior day on Saturday, hosting Rogers State University for another crucial MIAA conference doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
