After 19 seasons building Olentangy Liberty into a central Ohio wrestling powerhouse, head coach Mark Marinelli has announced his resignation. The news, confirmed on April 10th, marks the end of a significant era for the Patriots' program.
Marinelli's tenure was defined by remarkable consistency and success. He guided Liberty to an eighth-place finish at the state tournament this past season, extending the program's impressive streak to 11 consecutive top-10 finishes. Under his leadership, the Patriots secured 12 sectional titles, three district championships, and he mentored eight individual state champions.
His resignation follows a recent investigation by Olentangy Schools into incorrect win-loss records being submitted for postseason seeding. As a result, Marinelli was suspended for the 2025 Division I district tournament due to what the district termed an "inadvertent reporting error."
A decorated wrestler in his own right, Marinelli's roots in Ohio wrestling run deep. He was a state champion at DeSales High School in 1986 before becoming a four-year letterwinner at Ohio State. His coaching career began at his alma mater, DeSales, where he led the Stallions to Division II state runner-up finishes in 2000 and 2003 before taking the helm at Liberty in 2007.
Marinelli's departure leaves a major void for a program that has become synonymous with excellence, setting a high standard for dedication and performance in Ohio high school wrestling.
