NEW YORK — The basketball world bid farewell to a true legend Tuesday as Tina Charles, one of the most dominant forces in WNBA history, officially announced her retirement. After 15 remarkable seasons, the Queens native and sure-fire Hall of Famer hangs up her sneakers, leaving behind a legacy that will be felt for generations.

Former and current players who shared the court with Charles were quick to celebrate her incredible journey. "Tina is a legend," said New York Liberty star Breanna Stewart, who played alongside Charles during a brief stint in Seattle in 2022. "I'm just really proud of what her career entails. Being in New York, having the opportunity to play for the Liberty, but also playing elsewhere—she's someone who's like a bucket. She's really hard to guard, and she's number two in scoring for a reason. But beyond that, it's the way she makes an impact in the community, the way she expands her reach everywhere she goes."

Charles finishes her career as the WNBA's all-time rebound leader with 4,262 boards, and she sits second on the all-time scoring list—a testament to her relentless work in the paint. Her trophy case is packed: eight All-Star selections, two scoring titles, four rebounding crowns, four All-Defensive Team nods, and the 2010 Rookie of the Year award. She earned MVP honors in 2012 after averaging 18 points and 10.5 rebounds with the Connecticut Sun, the same franchise where her career began and where she played her final season in 2025.

Before her professional stardom, Charles was a force at UConn, winning two NCAA titles under legendary coach Geno Auriemma. Her greatness also shined on the international stage, helping Team USA capture three Olympic gold medals. In 2021, she was named to The W25, the league's list of the top 25 players of all time.

"If I think back to 2016, that Olympics, I was the youngest player there," Stewart recalled. "I clung to the Huskies, clung to the UConn players—including Tina, Sue Bird, and Maya Moore—because I needed guidance and familiarity. She's had such an impact."

As we celebrate Tina Charles' career, we're reminded that legends don't just dominate the game—they elevate everyone around them. Whether you're lacing up for your own pickup game or cheering from the stands, her legacy inspires us to chase greatness, one rebound at a time.
