The Jacksonville Jaguars may have passed on drafting a quarterback this year, but they didn't leave the position untouched. Enter Joey Aguilar, the undrafted free agent from Tennessee, who turned heads at the team's rookie minicamp this weekend.

Head coach Liam Coen, known for his keen eye on offensive talent, offered his first impressions of Aguilar after Saturday's practice. "I think Joey did a nice job of learning a lot of information in a short period of time, especially so much different than he's used to," Coen said. "Just from a cadence standpoint, that's something that he's had to get used to doing over the last 48 hours."

Aguilar's journey is a story of steady growth. After transferring from Appalachian State to the SEC powerhouse Tennessee in 2025, he saw his game take a significant leap. His completion percentage jumped nearly 12% from the previous season, while his average yards per pass attempt climbed from 7.7 to 8.8, according to Pro Football Focus. Those numbers translated to 24 touchdowns against 10 interceptions and 3,571 passing yards with the Volunteers—a stat line that clearly caught the Jaguars' attention.

Coen was particularly impressed with Aguilar's command of the offense, even under the pressure of a condensed learning curve. "I think he did a nice job of running the show, if you will," Coen added. "Handling, I mean, these weren't all just calling and running plays either. Like, we had cans and oscars in there, and I think he did a nice job operating. I thought he threw it better today, probably. I mean, he didn't throw to these guys ever. So, it's hard when you're asking them to be perfect and no balls on the ground within timing and rhythm. And I think it'll be fun to see them open it up a little bit with the guys next week."

For now, Aguilar is set to compete with Carter Bradley for the third quarterback spot on the depth chart. Last season, the Jaguars opted to keep just two quarterbacks on the active 53-man roster, stashing a third on the practice squad. If Aguilar can build on this promising start, he might just carve out a role in Jacksonville's evolving offense.
