Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Liam Coen delivered a clear and powerful message to his veteran players ahead of rookie minicamp: set the standard.
Following a busy weekend that introduced 10 draft picks and 18 undrafted free agents to the franchise, Coen is now turning his attention to the critical integration phase. The rookies will join the veterans for Phase II of offseason programs, and Coen made sure his seasoned players understood their role in this transition.
"We were all starting off so fresh at that time," Coen reflected, recalling his own first year as head coach. "And that's exactly what I mentioned to the vets on Thursday. When these guys get in here on Monday and get integrated with you all, I need you to set the standards and show these guys what our standards are of how to operate in the meeting room settings, walkthroughs, and practice."
The message was simple but profound: competition for roster spots is healthy, but unity is essential. "They're competing with each other for spots, but man, we need every single guy," Coen emphasized.
For the incoming rookies, the learning curve extends far beyond the playbook. Adjusting to the daily rhythms of NFL life—from practice protocols to meeting room etiquette—can be overwhelming. While coaches will guide the newcomers, Coen believes veteran mentorship creates a stronger, faster learning environment.
This season feels different in Jacksonville. Unlike last year, when Coen was installing entirely new systems, the Jaguars now have continuity. The foundation laid in 2025 allows the team to build rather than rebuild. Coen's overarching theme this offseason has been urgency—making sure last year's success becomes the standard, not the exception.
With defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile also entering his second year, the Jaguars have the pieces in place for a significant leap. But as Coen reminded his veterans, that leap starts with the little things: how you walk into a meeting room, how you approach a walkthrough, and how you welcome the next generation of Jaguars.
