Mount Carmel pitcher Jake Matise received a piece of information Friday morning that provided him with some extra focus and motivation to take into his start later in the afternoon. Matise, a senior right-hander who has committed to Lewis, found out that Caravan coach Brian Hurry was one win shy of 700 for his career. “I knew I wanted to get it done for him,” Matise said. “I didn’t want it to ...

Mount Carmel senior Jake Matise took the mound Friday afternoon with a little extra fire. That morning, the right-handed pitcher, who is committed to play at Lewis University, learned his coach, Brian Hurry, was sitting on career win number 699. For Matise, the mission was clear: deliver milestone victory number 700.

"I knew I wanted to get it done for him," Matise said. "I didn't want it to happen tomorrow or next week. I wanted to be the one to get him that win. Being a part of his long history is special."

Matise delivered in a big way, authoring a masterpiece in a dominant 8-0 Catholic League crossover win over IC Catholic. The future Flyer was in complete command, striking out 10 batters and allowing just three hits over a complete-game shutout. Incredibly, he faced only 23 batters and needed just 68 pitches, issuing zero walks in a performance that was as efficient as it was powerful.

His catcher, Triton College commit Christian Clark, summed up the feeling perfectly: "Having Jake out there gives us a big confidence boost. He throws the ball over the plate and gets outs. It makes it easy for me."

The Caravan offense provided ample support for the historic occasion. Illinois recruit Joey Ireland went 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Pancho Vazquez delivered a key two-run single. The victory improved Mount Carmel's record to 11-5 and, more importantly, secured a legendary round number for their longtime leader.

For Coach Hurry, who has led the program since 2000, the 700th win was a moment to reflect on the journey and the people who made it possible. "I'm thankful to Mount Carmel for the opportunity," Hurry said. "It's a privilege to be the head coach here. I think about all the guys, going back 20 years... it's extra meaningful to do it with this group."

For Matise, the milestone win caps a strong personal start to the season, improving his record to 4-0 with a stellar 0.55 ERA. He also pitches with the confidence of a player whose future is set, having committed to Lewis last September. On this day, however, his focus was squarely on the present and securing a piece of history for the coach who helped him get there.
