Dick Vitale has melanoma in his lung and liver cavity and will be starting immunotherapy soon, the legendary college basketball announcer said in a statement released Monday by ESPN.

The voice of college basketball, Dick Vitale, has shared a personal and powerful health update. The legendary ESPN broadcaster announced he has been diagnosed with melanoma in his lung and liver cavity and will soon begin immunotherapy treatments.

True to his indefatigable spirit, Vitale delivered the news with characteristic optimism and fight. "I plan on winning this battle," the 86-year-old said. "I've beaten melanoma. I've beaten lymphoma. I've beaten vocal cord cancer. I've beaten lymph node cancer. I'm four for four and I'm fully confident I'm going to make it five for five." He emphasized, "The best news I can share today is this: I feel fantastic."

This latest challenge comes after a recent return to the broadcast booth. Vitale, whose iconic "It's Awesome, Baby!" call has energized the sport since his ESPN debut in 1979, took a nearly two-year hiatus before announcing he was cancer-free in February 2024. He recently wrapped his 46th season calling games for the network, a testament to his enduring passion.

Beyond the microphone, Vitale's legacy is defined by his heart. He used this announcement to spotlight his 21st annual gala on May 1st, which benefits pediatric cancer research. "At 86 years young I've lived a hell of a life, and I'm more motivated than ever to raise money for kids battling cancer," he stated, aiming to add to the over $105 million already raised. For a figure who has given so much to the game, his greatest fight continues both for himself and for others.
