In a move that has Michigan fans buzzing with excitement, legacy recruit Charles Woodson Jr. has officially committed to the Wolverines, announcing his pledge to head coach Kyle Whittingham and the new staff on Friday. The younger Woodson is ready to carve out his own legacy in Ann Arbor, following in the footsteps of his father—Heisman Trophy winner and NFL Hall of Famer Charles Woodson Sr.

Woodson Jr. chose Michigan over a competitive offer list that included Kentucky, Ole Miss, and Texas A&M. He becomes the 10th commit for the Wolverines in the 2027 class, a group that the Rivals Industry previously ranked No. 12 nationally. This commitment adds significant momentum to Michigan's recruiting efforts, especially given the rich history of the Woodson name in college football.

As a junior, Woodson Jr. put up impressive numbers: 73 tackles, eight passes defended, two interceptions, and a forced fumble. He also scored two touchdowns—one via a kick return and the other on a pick-six. In Thursday night’s spring game, he continued to shine, running back an interception 40 yards, breaking up four passes, and recording nine tackles in just three quarters of play.

“He’s dynamic,” said head coach David Aubrey. “He’s explosive. Has a very high football IQ. Does well in zone coverage and man coverage. What I think is the most impressive thing is how physical he is.” That physicality and versatility make him a perfect fit for Michigan's defensive schemes, and fans can expect to see him make an immediate impact when he arrives on campus.

Woodson Jr. also played in the Navy All-American Bowl in January, showcasing his skills on a national stage. He was recruited to Michigan by safeties coach Tyler Stockton, and Whittingham made a point to visit him at his school early in the year—a gesture that didn't go unnoticed.

“I think they have a genuine interest in junior, not because of dad,” Aubrey added. “I think that’s going to be the storyline, dad-son, but they have a genuine interest in Charles and they showed that. The whole staff came down to see him in January. I never experienced that in coaching. Literally the whole staff came down. Pretty cool opportunity for him.”

Of course, the comparisons to his legendary father are inevitable, but Woodson Jr. seems ready for the challenge. “Obviously he’s going to have big shoes to fill because the narrative will always be how well does he matchup compared to what his dad did,” Aubrey noted. “But I think he’s up for the challenge. He’s always been poised. And what’s really cool, his dad has never shown that he’s strongly influenced him to attend Michigan. He allowed him to choose his own path and that’s really cool.”

For Michigan fans, this commitment is more than just a recruiting win—it's a connection to one of the program's greatest legends. And for Woodson Jr., it's a chance to write his own chapter in maize and blue.
