Gary Payton believes LeBron James could end up with the Golden State Warriors if he decides to leave the Los Angeles Lakers. The prediction matters because Payton is not just another former player giving an outside opinion.

Gary Payton has stirred up the NBA rumor mill with a bold prediction: LeBron James could be heading to the Golden State Warriors if he decides to leave the Los Angeles Lakers. And this isn't just any former player throwing out hot takes—Payton's son, Gary Payton II, currently shares the court with Stephen Curry on the Warriors, giving this speculation some serious weight.

On the latest episode of the Nightcap podcast, Payton broke down why he thinks LeBron would stay in the Western Conference. "I really think he's going to stay West. He built that big old house, man. He done spent so much money over there, them kids is loving it, his wife loves it there. I don't think he comes to the East," Payton explained. He added, "That's going to be a little toll on him to go back and forth. There's a good shot that if he leaves, he's going to Golden State."

Payton's reasoning leans more on lifestyle than basketball fit. LeBron has deep roots in Los Angeles, and his family is thriving there. Moving across the country would be a major disruption. So, if he wants to stay in the West but part ways with the Lakers, the Warriors become the obvious fantasy scenario—pairing him with Curry for a blockbuster duo that would shake up the league.

This isn't the first time Golden State has been linked to LeBron. The Warriors have reportedly explored the idea before, and the rumor mill has long buzzed with whispers of a potential James-Curry partnership. But Payton sees Lakers owner Jeanie Buss as the biggest roadblock. "I'm telling you he's coming to Golden State if he leaves. But if he doesn't, I don't think Jeanie Buss is going to let him go," Payton said. "I don't think she's going to get nowhere. She's still running that thing for the next five years, and she's not going to let him go nowhere."

For now, LeBron's future remains uncertain, but the idea of him donning a Warriors jersey is enough to get any basketball fan dreaming. Whether it's fantasy or reality, one thing's for sure—the NBA offseason just got a whole lot more interesting.
