The Los Angeles Lakers punched their ticket to the NBA Western Conference semifinals on Friday, taking down the Houston Rockets in six games—and they did it without their superstar playmaker. Luka Doncic remains sidelined as he recovers from a Grade 2 hamstring strain suffered on April 2, leaving a massive void in the lineup.
Enter LeBron James. At 41 years old, the four-time MVP has reminded everyone why he's still one of the game's elite. In Doncic's absence, James has averaged 23.2 points, 7.2 rebounds, 8.3 assists, and 1.3 steals across 38.7 minutes per game, proving he can still shoulder the load as the team's primary option.
On Tuesday's episode of the "Mind the Game" podcast, co-host Steve Nash pressed James about stepping into that leading role under such difficult circumstances. James didn't hold back.
"It's definitely not the situation that I would want to be under the circumstances, obviously," James said. "I understand that I can always tap back into this role, and it's something I've done for the majority, if not my entire career. But I wouldn't want to do it under the circumstances that we're in."
He continued, highlighting the broader challenges: "When we're losing an MVP-caliber player in Luka to start the playoffs and we're losing a 25-plus-point scorer in Austin Reaves to start a series, you don't never want to go into the postseason and not have your guys, your soldiers. Yeah, it's definitely been challenging, but I've just tried to weather the storm and just rise to the occasion as much as I could."
Now, the Lakers face a daunting matchup against the Oklahoma City Thunder, who swept the Phoenix Suns in the first round and boast a fully healthy roster. The defending champions enter as heavy favorites to repeat, but James and his squad aren't backing down. The 22-time All-Star is chasing his fifth ring, and he's leaving everything on the court.
There's also a glimmer of hope: Doncic could return later in the series, potentially giving Los Angeles the boost they need to pull off an upset against the league's best.
