Bristol Rovers chairman Hussain AlSaeed says moving away from the Mem is the "most likely" option.

Bristol Rovers chairman Hussain AlSaeed has confirmed that leaving the Memorial Stadium is "most likely" the path forward for the League Two club, as redevelopment plans at their historic home continue to hit roadblocks.

Since taking over as majority owner in 2023, AlSaeed has been exploring ways to increase the Mem's capacity and modernize the ground. However, speaking to BBC Radio Bristol, he revealed that multiple studies have returned "red flags," making a move from their home since 1996 the more viable option.

"It [moving] would be most likely that the option that we are considering at the moment because of all the red flags that we had in the Memorial - the location, all that - it makes it extremely difficult to redevelop," AlSaeed said.

The chairman confirmed the club is now examining several "targets" in and around Bristol, entirely separate from any previously explored locations. These new options are being evaluated with the help of local investors and developers. However, AlSaeed was quick to caution fans, acknowledging past disappointments with stadium promises: "Our fans have been misled in the past regarding the new stadium... so I'm not going to say that until I have concrete plans."

This isn't the first time Rovers have flirted with a move. The club was entangled in a High Court battle with Sainsbury's over a deal to buy the Mem in 2011, and a proposed relocation to Bristol's Fruit Market site was still "on the table" when AlSaeed took over. More than £400,000 has already been spent on studies, surveys, and architectural designs for redevelopment at the Memorial Stadium alone.

The Mem's current location in the busy residential area of Horfield, adjacent to the bustling Gloucester Road, presents significant logistical challenges for expansion. For now, Rovers fans will have to wait for those "concrete plans" while the club explores its options for a new home. As the search continues, one thing is clear: the Gas are gearing up for a major change.
