Le Bris on Ballard suspension, staying humble and 'stability'

Sunderland boss Regis le Bris has been speaking to the media before Saturday's Premier League game against Manchester United at Stadium of Light (kick-off 15:00 BST). Apart from Romaine Mundle and suspended Dan Ballard, everyone is available confirmed Le Bris. The Sunderland boss admitted they are disappointed the appeal against Ballard's red card was rejected because the "situation was a bit unclear".

Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris faced the media ahead of Saturday's highly anticipated Premier League clash with Manchester United at the Stadium of Light (kick-off 15:00 BST), and he didn't shy away from the big topics—from squad availability to staying grounded amid rising expectations.

First, the team news: Le Bris confirmed that, aside from Romaine Mundle and the suspended Dan Ballard, his entire squad is fit and ready to go. The Ballard situation, however, continues to sting. The club's appeal against the defender's red card was rejected, and Le Bris didn't hide his frustration. "The situation was a bit unclear," he admitted. "I do think he tried to grab the shirt, and in the duel, unfortunately, long hair got caught. It wasn't intentional. The law is the law, so I understand the referee's decision at one point, but at the same time, I think the rule is a bit unclear."

With Ballard out, all eyes turn to Lutsharel Geertruida, and Le Bris sees this as a golden opportunity. "Yes, it is an opportunity because we have had different options this season. He is versatile, a bit like Trai Hume, so it's really useful for us. When we need somebody ready to play as a midfielder, left-sided centre-back, or right-back, he can manage different positions." That kind of flexibility could be crucial against a Manchester United side known for its tactical fluidity.

When asked about Sunderland's outside shot at European football, Le Bris kept his feet firmly on the ground. "At the minute, it's really important to stay humble because I don't know if we started to dream after a good period. But as soon as you drop your level just by 10 per cent, the league is so demanding that you can't stay alive in the game." It's a wise reminder that in the Premier League, complacency is the quickest route to a reality check.

Looking ahead to the visit of Manchester United, Le Bris described the test as "challenging" but one his players relish. "The players like a challenge, to be just on the edge, to show how good they can be. But it's also a question of togetherness, the connection between players, and managing key moments." He emphasized that success will come from being "really disciplined, well-connected," and willing to work hard—while also being "bold and creative." "If you don't move, disturb the opponent, they will play in their comfort zone, and I don't think we can play like that if we want to be competitive."

Ultimately, Le Bris called on his team to deliver "the best version of Sunderland." With the fans behind them and a point to prove, Saturday promises to be a defining moment in their season.
