Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris has confirmed that the club's appeal against Dan Ballard's red card has been rejected, meaning the defender will miss the remainder of the season. The Northern Ireland international was sent off for a hair pull during last Saturday's clash with Wolves—a decision that has left the Black Cats frustrated but determined to move forward.

"Yes, we are very disappointed," Le Bris admitted when discussing the appeal's outcome. "The situation was a bit unclear. The Premier League is built around physicality, duels, and intensity. I think Ballard tried to grab the shirt in the duel, but unfortunately, his long hair got caught. It wasn't intentional, and the law is the law. I understand the referee's decision on one hand, but at the same time, the rule is a bit unclear."

The three-match suspension means Ballard's season is effectively over, but Le Bris is already looking ahead. "We will try to use the time to prepare for next season because we don't have another choice," he said, emphasizing a forward-thinking approach.

However, every cloud has a silver lining. Ballard's absence opens the door for other squad members to step up—most notably Lutsharel Geertruida. "Yes, it's an opportunity, of course," Le Bris noted. "We've had different options this season. Geertruida is versatile, a bit like Trai Hume. It's really useful for the manager and coaching team because when we need someone ready to play as a midfielder, centre-back, or right-back, he can manage different positions. He did well, but at the same time, the competition in specific positions is often high."

Looking ahead, Sunderland welcome Manchester United to the Stadium of Light this Saturday, and Le Bris has delivered a double injury boost.
