After riding high from an ACC series win over Louisville last weekend, the Duke Blue Devils hit a rough patch, dropping four straight games. The skid included two losses to NC State, one to East Carolina, and a final defeat to Louisville, putting the team in a must-win situation on the road.
Facing a potential series sweep, the Blue Devils dug deep and found the late-game magic they desperately needed. A dramatic 3-2 victory over the Wolfpack on Sunday finally snapped the frustrating losing streak and salvaged the weekend.
Duke came out swinging, capitalizing on an NC State error to score in the first inning. They doubled their lead in the second thanks to a massive 404-foot solo shot from Aidan Zorn. The Blue Devils held that 2-0 advantage for much of the game, but the Wolfpack fought back, tying the score with a rally in the bottom of the eighth inning.
With the game on the line in the top of the ninth, Kaden Smith stepped up as the hero. He launched a 390-foot missile over the left field wall for a go-ahead solo home run. The Duke bullpen then locked it down in the bottom of the frame, securing the hard-fought 3-2 win and a huge sigh of relief for the team.
With their momentum restored, the Blue Devils enjoy an off-day Monday before returning to action at home against Liberty University on Tuesday.
