The Fighting Illini golf team nearly pulled off a stunning comeback at the Big Ten Championships, but their late rally fell just short, marking the third consecutive year they've finished as runners-up.
Entering the final day in third place at +5 and trailing UCLA by a daunting 15 shots, Illinois looked out of contention. But the team refused to back down. Max Herendeen sparked the charge with a clutch birdie on the 15th hole, cutting the deficit to just three strokes. Trey Marrion then capped off his round with a birdie on 18, pulling Illinois into a tie for first place.
However, the Bruins held their nerve down the stretch, pulling away for a four-shot victory and leaving the Illini with another silver finish. Individually, Max Herendeen and Ryan Voois shared third place on the leaderboard, both finishing at 3-under par.
Despite the heartbreak, Illinois now turns its attention to the NCAA Regionals. Last season, the Illini hosted a regional and advanced to the national finals, where they were eliminated in the third round. With this strong showing at the conference championships, the team is poised to make another deep postseason run.
