Late change no excuse for Saints defeat - Dingwall

England centre Fraser Dingwall says Northampton cannot use the pre-match loss of second row Tom Lockett as an excuse for defeat by Leicester Tigers.

In the high-stakes world of Premiership Rugby, every match brings its own drama—and the Northampton Saints' recent clash with Leicester Tigers was no exception. Despite a last-minute lineup shake-up, England centre Fraser Dingwall insists that the Saints have no excuses for their 41-17 defeat at Mattioli Woods Welford Road.

The pre-game buzz took an unexpected turn when second row Tom Lockett was forced to withdraw during warm-ups, a critical loss given his role in orchestrating line-outs. Chunya Munga stepped up as a late replacement, but the disruption was palpable. Northampton, sitting at the top of the Premiership table, saw three players sent to the sin bin as Leicester ran in six tries to hand the Saints only their second league loss of the season.

"You prep the whole week with him calling the line-outs, and that's something he's a big part of," Dingwall told BBC Radio Northampton. "But we back everyone to come in and do a job—and Chunya, who stepped up, did a really good job. It's always frustrating losing people just before the game, but that isn't the reason we lost. There's way more to it than that."

Dingwall was quick to point out where the Saints fell short, emphasizing the fine margins that separate victory from defeat in elite rugby. "We're missing the tiny details, that's all it is. You launch better, you get your delivery in terms of your settings better, and all of a sudden you're imposing your game onto them and they are the ones having to give away penalties instead of us."

With just three games remaining before the play-offs, the standings are tightening. Northampton still lead the pack, four points clear of Bath and five ahead of Leicester, while Exeter Chiefs lurk in fourth, eight points back. Every match now carries added weight, and the Saints' next challenge comes on Friday at home against fifth-placed Bristol Bears—a team that has already beaten them once this season.

"Every game now is a big game, we're at the back end of the season," Dingwall added. "It's another team around that top four, they're playing some good stuff and they're the only other team who have beaten us in the league. We know there's a challenge there, they're coming to our place and we've got to get excited by that."

For the Saints, it's about refocusing on the fundamentals—executing the small details that turn pressure into points. As the playoff race heats up, the question isn't whether they can bounce back, but how quickly they can sharpen their game when it matters most.
