The New York Mets are making a bold move to shake up their struggling lineup. According to reports, the last-place Mets are calling up their top hitting prospect, A.J. Ewing, in a bid to inject some life into an offense that has been sputtering all season.

Ewing, the team's No. 2 overall prospect behind right-handed pitcher Jonah Tong, is ranked 78th in all of baseball by MLB.com. Drafted in the fourth round of the 2023 MLB Draft—using a compensatory pick gained when Jacob deGrom left in free agency—the 21-year-old brings a versatile skill set that could be exactly what the Mets need.

While Ewing hasn't shown consistent power yet, with just 15 home runs in 251 minor-league games, he makes up for it with elite speed and a knack for making contact. A career .290/.395/.425 hitter in the minors, he's also swiped 101 bases, offering a dynamic threat on the basepaths. Defensively, he's played both center field and second base, giving the Mets flexibility at multiple positions.

That versatility is crucial right now. The Mets have been hit hard by injuries, with shortstop Francisco Lindor (calf), center fielder Luis Robert Jr. (lumbar spine disc herniation), and designated hitter Jorge Polanco (wrist, Achilles bursitis) all on the injured list. As of Monday, New York holds the worst record in baseball at 15-25, despite having the second-highest payroll in the majors—behind only the World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers.

The numbers tell a grim story: The Mets rank near the bottom of MLB in runs scored (29th), home runs (27th), batting average (29th), and OPS (30th). Ewing's call-up won't solve everything overnight, but his blend of speed, contact hitting, and defensive versatility could provide the spark this team desperately needs. For Mets fans, it's a glimmer of hope in a season that's quickly slipping away.
