Las Vegas Raiders Mailbag: Offensive Line storylines

OL, DL, and Roster Battles

The Las Vegas Raiders are making waves this offseason, and it's time to dive into the latest mailbag—a fan-favorite tradition where we tackle your burning questions. This week, the spotlight is on the offensive line and defense, with roster battles heating up as training camp approaches.

Let's start with the defense, which has undergone a major makeover. The Raiders added serious firepower with EDGE rusher Kwity Paye, linebackers Nakobe Dean, Quay Walker, and Segun Olubi, plus a trade for cornerback Taron Johnson from Buffalo. To top it off, they drafted six rookies—four defensive backs and two defensive linemen. This unit is built for versatility, and while coaches Klint Kubiak and Rob Leonard talk about a 3-4 base, expect to see a 4-2-5 nickel formation as the go-to. In today's NFL, teams rarely use base defenses more than 22% of the time, with most hovering around 13-17%. Nickel is the new normal, and the Raiders are leaning into it.

Last season, Las Vegas finished 14th in total defense, but that was with a rotation of free agents like Devin White, Elandon Roberts, Kyu Blu Kelly, and Jamal Adams—all still unsigned. This year, Rob Leonard's scheme will blend Patrick Graham's cover 3 concepts with an aggressive front (a shift from last year's passive approach that hurt the pass rush) and Mike Macdonald's love for cover 3, two nickel defenders, and heavy secondary rotation. The result? A defense that could rank anywhere from 10th to 12th overall.

But there are some question marks. The linebacker corps lacks depth, and the secondary is incredibly young—four rookies will see real playing time, which could lead to hiccups with coverage assignments and route recognition. Still, the potential is sky-high. If everything clicks, this defense could peak in the 7th to 10th range. The floor? A still-respectable 17th to 21st. With so much young talent, the Raiders are building something exciting—just expect a few growing pains along the way.
