The NBA's leading scorer will be watching from the sidelines as the playoffs heat up. In a move that surprised absolutely no one, Lakers superstar Luka Doncic has been officially ruled out for Game 1 of the Western Conference semifinals against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Doncic, who has been sidelined with a nagging hamstring injury since April 2, continues to battle through a recovery process that has been slower than anticipated. The Grade 2 hamstring strain he suffered—ironically against the same Thunder team—has kept him off the court for over a month now.
When pressed for updates on his star guard's status, Lakers head coach JJ Redick kept it short and sweet: "I don't have any updates on Luka."
Despite traveling to Spain for specialized treatment aimed at speeding up his return, Doncic has only been able to engage in controlled on-court work like shooting and light movement. He hasn't yet progressed to running or any physical on-court drills, which doesn't bode well for an imminent return.
"Obviously, we always want to have Luka out there," said teammate Austin Reaves, acknowledging the massive void left by the Slovenian sensation. "He's one of the best players in the league, if not the best player. It's definitely a different task. Everyone has to play differently to create and fill the void of the things he does for us."
Sources close to the situation indicate that Doncic is expected to miss at least the first two games of the series, with a potential return eyed for Game 3. However, given the Thunder's notoriously physical style of play and Doncic's current recovery timeline, even that optimistic scenario feels like a long shot.
For Lakers fans, this means their championship hopes now rest on the shoulders of LeBron James and a supporting cast that will need to step up in a big way. For the Thunder, it's an opportunity to strike early against a wounded giant. Either way, this series just got a whole lot more interesting.
