Lakers Preparing for OKC Without Luka Doncic

The Los Angeles Lakers are gearing up for a tough Western Conference semifinals matchup against the defending NBA champion Oklahoma City Thunder—and they'll have to do it without their superstar, Luka Doncic.

After battling past the Houston Rockets in the first round with Doncic in the lineup, the Lakers now face an even steeper challenge. Head coach JJ Redick told reporters Monday that he had no update on Doncic's recovery, leaving his status for the series uncertain.

With Doncic sidelined indefinitely, all eyes turn to center DeAndre Ayton, who is expected to play a pivotal role against the Thunder's dynamic frontcourt. Redick praised Ayton for his impact in the Houston series, noting that the big man's consistent presence over the past few months has been a game-changer for the team.

"DA's had a great season. He was instrumental in us getting past Houston. I think his baseline of who he is every day for the last two-and-a-half months has been awesome," Redick said. "He's the person that changes our ceiling the most."

Ayton, who signed a two-year, $16.6 million deal with the Lakers last summer, has delivered in the playoffs. Through the first six games, he averaged 11.8 points, 10.8 rebounds, one assist, and one block while shooting an efficient 60.4% from the field in 31 minutes per game.

He's not alone in stepping up. Players like Luke Kennard and Rui Hachimura have also elevated their games during the postseason. Veteran guard Marcus Smart noted that Doncic's absence has forced the entire roster to raise their level of play across the board.

The Lakers will open the second-round series Tuesday night at the Paycom Center in Oklahoma City. With their superstar watching from the sidelines, it's a true test of depth, resilience, and team chemistry for the purple and gold.
