Should the Los Angeles Lakers part ways with LeBron James to reclaim championship glory? According to former Lakers champion and head coach Byron Scott, the answer is a resounding yes.
On his podcast, Byron Scott’s Fast Break, Scott didn't mince words. He urged the Lakers to move on from the 41-year-old superstar this summer if they truly want to compete for titles in the years ahead.
“You’re getting paid $50 million. You’re 41, 42, 43 years old,” Scott said. “If the Lakers want to be a championship team for the next five, six, seven years, you’ve got to build around Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves. You can’t do that if he’s still here. That $50 million comes off the cap. You can go get two really good, young basketball players who can come in and help.”
The Lakers face a pivotal offseason filled with tough questions, and LeBron’s future is at the center of it all. As he wraps up his 23rd NBA season, the four-time MVP is set to become an unrestricted free agent. Despite being 41, James has shown he could still play for several more years if he chooses.
But here’s the twist: the Lakers may not be the best fit for him anymore—especially if he’s seeking a hefty payday. Los Angeles is projected to have significant salary cap flexibility this offseason, with over $40 million in expiring contracts. That opens the door to target players who perfectly complement Dončić and Reaves.
The challenge for Lakers management is clear: build a title-contending roster around their young stars. Whether that roster includes LeBron James or not remains the biggest question of the summer. One thing is certain: the clock is ticking, and the purple and gold have some tough decisions ahead.
