The Lakers hung around for most of Game 1 against the Thunder. That might actually be the scariest part.

Before Tuesday's Western Conference semifinals tip-off, Lakers head coach JJ Redick sat on the bench, closed his eyes, and took a deep breath. He'll need a lot more of those in the days ahead. Because even after a competitive first three quarters—one where LeBron James dropped 27 points, six assists, and four rebounds, and four of five starters scored in double figures—the Lakers still watched it all slip away in a 108-90 loss.

The final 18 minutes told the real story. Oklahoma City outscored Los Angeles 39-25 down the stretch. The Lakers shot just 33% from deep. They turned the ball over 18 times, giving up 20 points off those mistakes. And they had no answer for Chet Holmgren, whose presence on both ends turned the Lakers' offense into a puzzle with missing pieces.

"Once you make a couple mental mistakes, it seems like they take advantage of every one of them," Austin Reaves admitted after a tough night of his own.

Redick had summed it up best before the game even started: "We've sucked against this team."

Now, without Luka Dončić in the lineup, the Lakers face a Thunder squad that is deeper, younger, and more complete. Game 1 wasn't a wake-up call—it was a confirmation. The Lakers can compete for stretches, but competing isn't the same as winning. And against this Thunder team, that gap looks wider than ever.
