Lakers Legend Magic Johnson Speaks at Stillman College Commencement

Basketball legend and business mogul Earvin "Magic" Johnson brought his signature winning mindset to Stillman College's 2026 Spring Commencement, delivering an inspiring keynote address that blended sports wisdom with real-world business advice.

The Los Angeles Lakers icon spoke to approximately 114 graduating students at the historically Black college in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, which was celebrating its 150th anniversary. Johnson, known for his dazzling playmaking on the court, shifted gears to share insights on navigating life after college.

"You have to sometimes be uncomfortable to get comfortable," Johnson told the graduates, drawing from his own journey from NBA superstar to successful entrepreneur. He founded Magic Johnson Enterprises in 1987, just before retiring from professional basketball, and has since built a diverse business portfolio that includes stakes in the Lakers, Los Angeles Dodgers, Los Angeles Sparks, and LAFC.

"I know what to do with that ball – but, I wanted to become a businessman, so I got uncomfortable," Johnson explained. "It made me uncomfortable because I didn't know business, so I had to study, do research, get mentors who are businesspeople to teach me so I can get comfortable with finally becoming a businessman."

The ceremony was especially meaningful as Stillman College honored Johnson with an honorary doctor of business administration degree and made him an honorary member of the school's basketball team, presenting him with a framed jersey. Stillman President Yolanda Page praised Johnson's dedication to Black excellence and education, noting his work through the Magic Johnson Foundation to support underserved communities.

Johnson's message resonated beyond the court: he encouraged graduates to embrace lifelong learning and step outside their comfort zones – a playbook for success that works whether you're chasing championships or building an empire. The Lakers legend's appearance was part of Stillman's year-long celebration of its sesquicentennial anniversary, marking 150 years of academic excellence.
