In a move that's sure to resonate across Los Angeles, Lakers icon Magic Johnson has officially thrown his support behind Mayor Karen Bass for re-election this November 3rd. The Hall of Famer, known for his game-winning assists on the court, is now making a powerful assist off it.
"She's doing a tremendous job," Johnson said in a public endorsement. "Mayor Bass has to have a second term, and I'm excited to say that." The basketball legend emphasized their 30-year friendship and praised Bass for her leadership on two critical issues facing the city: homelessness and reducing homicide rates.
Bass, who made history as the first woman and second African American to serve as LA's mayor when she took office in December 2022, has faced challenges—most notably criticism over her handling of the 2025 wildfires. But Johnson remains steadfast in his support, adding, "You took on a tough job here, and you've done a fabulous job. All of us appreciate your effort."
Interestingly, the Lakers' front office isn't entirely united on this one. Team governor Jeanie Buss has taken a different path, donating the maximum $1,800 to Republican candidate Spencer Pratt's 2026 mayoral campaign. Pratt was even spotted courtside next to Buss during Game 3 of the Western Conference semifinals between the Lakers and the Oklahoma City Thunder. However, unlike Johnson, Buss has stopped short of a public endorsement.
For now, Magic's message is clear: Mayor Bass has his vote, and he's rallying the city to get behind her vision. In a town where sports and politics often intersect, this endorsement carries the weight of a championship pedigree.
