Before joining the Lakers, Fairchild made a name for himself at Brigham Young University. Standing 6-foot-8, he was a dominant collegiate force, averaging a double-double of 20.9 points and 12.8 rebounds per game and earning WAC Player of the Year honors. His potential led the Lakers to select him with the 16th overall pick in the 1965 NBA Draft.

Fairchild's tenure in Los Angeles was brief but part of the franchise's fabric. During his rookie 1965-66 season, he appeared in 31 games, contributing 2 points and 1.5 rebounds in limited minutes. Though his NBA chapter was short, his professional journey continued in the rival American Basketball Association (ABA), where he played for several teams.

His career culminated on a high note, as he earned an ABA championship ring with the Indiana Pacers in 1970. While his time with the Lakers was just a footnote, John Fairchild's path from college star to pro champion is a reminder of the diverse careers that have contributed to the rich tapestry of basketball history, a history embodied by every Lakers jersey.
