Lakers Begin ‘Rebuild and Retool’ of Infrastructure as Rob Pelinka Details Major Organizational Changes

The Los Angeles Lakers are not only planning roster changes this offseason.

The Los Angeles Lakers are making waves this offseason—and we're not just talking about roster moves. Vice President of Basketball Operations and General Manager Rob Pelinka has announced a sweeping modernization of the organization's entire infrastructure, signaling a new era for the purple and gold.

During the team's end-of-season press conference alongside head coach JJ Redick, Pelinka revealed that the Lakers have already begun transforming key areas behind the scenes. This includes expanding the front office, upgrading player development resources, and investing heavily in sports science. While much of the offseason buzz will naturally center on building around superstar Luka Dončić and bringing back LeBron James and Austin Reaves, Pelinka made it clear that long-term success demands major changes off the court.

One of the biggest headlines? The Lakers are actively searching for two new assistant general managers. "One of those assistant GMs would oversee player, draft, and evaluation processes—including pro scouting, draft scouting, and player development," Pelinka explained. "The other AGM would focus on the strategy side—cap management, analytics, and data." These additions would bring the Lakers in line with the league's most forward-thinking teams, who rely heavily on analytics and data-driven decision-making.

But the upgrades don't stop in the front office. With the team's G League affiliate moving to a brand-new arena in Coachella Valley, the Lakers are repurposing the freed-up space at their current facility into state-of-the-art training and recovery areas. Pelinka credited Lakers governor Jeanie Buss and owner Mark Walter for championing these investments. "We have already started that reconstruction," Pelinka said.

The vision here is clear: the Lakers are modeling their approach after the championship-winning blueprint of Walter's other major sports property, the Los Angeles Dodgers—widely recognized as one of professional sports' gold standards for player development and sports science. As the franchise pivots to building around Dončić as its "north star," Pelinka emphasized that depth and development are non-negotiable. For Lakers fans, this isn't just a roster retool—it's a full organizational rebirth.
