The Los Angeles Lakers are facing a pivotal offseason decision that's been quietly simmering beneath the surface all season: what to do about Austin Reaves' contract situation. While the team is currently focused on their playoff run, the clock is ticking on one of the NBA's most intriguing financial dilemmas.

Reaves holds a $14.5 million player option for the 2026-27 season—a figure far below his market value. It's all but certain he'll decline that option and test free agency, leaving the Lakers with a critical choice: pay up or risk losing a key piece of their roster.

According to ESPN's Tim Bontemps and Brian Windhorst, the situation is complicated by a lack of obvious suitors. A Western Conference GM offered a telling insight: "Reaves' cap hold is $21 million, and he'll want the Lakers to pay him significantly more than that. What isn't clear is who the Lakers will be bidding against, because the cap space teams like the Bulls, Nets, and Jazz may not be in the market."

This creates a unique challenge for Reaves. His best leverage might come from a strong performance against the Oklahoma City Thunder in the second round, especially with Luka Doncic still sidelined. The question is whether he's healthy enough after his oblique injury to deliver that kind of statement.

Reaves has proven over the past two seasons that he can step up as a primary option when needed. But with Doncic now firmly established as the franchise cornerstone, the Lakers must evaluate how Reaves fits into that larger picture—and at what price point.

Free agency often comes down to bidding wars, but with potential suitors like the Bulls, Nets, and Jazz sitting on the sidelines, the Lakers hold more leverage than usual. The pressure is on Reaves to make his case on the court, and on the Lakers to decide if he's worth breaking the bank for.
