Coach JJ Redick and the Lakers led by LeBron James need all the help in their NBA Playoffs Game 1 bout with the Thunder, but it looks like Luka Doncic will not be ready yet.

The Los Angeles Lakers have officially ruled out Luka Doncic for Game 1 of their second-round NBA Playoffs series against the Oklahoma City Thunder, dealing a significant blow to a team that has already leaned heavily on LeBron James to advance past the first round.

Doncic, who has been sidelined since April 2 with a Grade 2 left hamstring strain, was listed as out on the Lakers' latest injury report, according to Marc Stein. The superstar guard traveled to Europe for treatment on the injury and has since returned to the team, but he has not yet begun the contact ramp-up required for a return to game action.

"He is not close," ESPN's Brian Windhorst said. "There is a whole ramp up that is required when you are coming back from a hamstring, and he has not started that contact ramp up yet. I don't know where they'll be in 10 days, but do not expect to see Luka the first few games of this series."

The timing couldn't be more challenging for head coach JJ Redick and the Lakers. After a hard-fought 4-2 series win over the Houston Rockets—powered by strong performances from Luke Kennard, Marcus Smart, and Deandre Ayton—Los Angeles now faces an even tougher test against a Thunder team led by MVP candidate Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

Without Doncic, the Lakers will need to get creative defensively. Options to match up against Gilgeous-Alexander include Jarred Vanderbilt, LeBron James, Marcus Smart, or Austin Reaves—but none offer the two-way presence Doncic brings when healthy.

For Lakers fans hoping to see a marquee Doncic vs. Gilgeous-Alexander showdown, patience will be key. The team is now faced with a difficult decision: try to extend the series long enough for Doncic to return, or find a way to win without any guarantee their star will be back at all.

As the playoffs heat up, every game counts—and for now, the Lakers will have to suit up and battle without their biggest offseason acquisition.
