After an eight-year drought, the Tahlequah Lady Tigers finally returned to the soccer playoffs—and they made sure to leave their mark, even in defeat. On Monday, May 4, the Lady Tigers faced off against Coweta in the first round, marking their first postseason appearance since 2018. Though the final score read 6-1 in favor of Coweta, Tahlequah refused to go quietly, scoring a goal and showing the heart of a team that's just getting started.
The stage was set for a revenge story. Earlier in the season, a shorthanded THS squad had fallen 1-0 to Coweta, and the Lady Tigers were hungry to flip the script. "I think they played hard; from the get-go, I thought they could win," said THS coach Scottie McKee. "We weren't afraid of Coweta at all. They are a talented team, and we thought we could have had a revenge match coming in."
The first half saw Coweta jump out to a 3-1 lead, but Tahlequah kept it close. Freshman Ally Whitmore provided the spark, netting the Lady Tigers' lone goal of the night and keeping hopes alive. The game was still within reach as the teams headed to the break.
But soccer is a game of moments, and about 15 minutes into the second half, Coweta began to stretch their advantage. Despite falling behind by three goals, the Lady Tigers never stopped pushing. Lorelie Espinoza, Maddie Sheron, Zoey Farris, and Addie Chuculate all launched strong runs and fired dangerous shots on goal, only to be denied by Coweta's standout goalkeeper. As time wound down, Coweta added two more goals to seal the 6-1 victory.
While the loss stings, the Lady Tigers are already looking ahead. With roughly half the starting lineup—a group of senior leaders—set to graduate, Coach McKee is confident the foundation has been laid for future success. "They were still trying in the end; we wish we had some cleaner shots go in," McKee said. "They played hard, and this is the first time we've been here since 2018. We expect to go back next year."
For a team that broke an eight-year playoff drought, this season wasn't just about one game—it was about proving that Tahlequah girls soccer is back. And with a young core hungry for more, the Lady Tigers are poised to make next season even more memorable.
