The New England Patriots released Stefon Diggs earlier this offseason, but he remains unsigned, and Patriots fans want him back.

Could a simple jersey number change be the clue that brings Stefon Diggs back to New England? Patriots fans certainly think so, and here's why the buzz is real.

Earlier this offseason, the Patriots released star wide receiver Stefon Diggs, but he remains a free agent. After being found not guilty of felony strangulation and misdemeanor assault and battery on May 5, Diggs took to Instagram to post a highlight reel, reminding everyone of his elite stats and value. The comments section quickly lit up with Patriots fans—and even some of his former teammates—begging him to return to Foxborough.

Now, a new development has fans even more convinced. According to ESPN's Mike Reiss, wide receiver Kyle Williams, who was initially reported to be switching to Diggs' old No. 8 jersey, has decided to stick with No. 18 instead. While it's possible financial considerations around jersey number changes played a role, the timing has fans speculating that No. 8 is being saved for Diggs.

Earlier this offseason, Patriots executive Eliot Wolf left the door wide open. "I never like to rule anything out... Don't want to close the door on anything," Wolf said in March. Diggs was set to carry a cap hit north of $25 million, but if he's willing to sign a more team-friendly short-term deal, he could be a steal.

If Diggs does return, he'd step into a new role. The Patriots have already signed Romeo Doubs and are reportedly closing in on a deal for A.J. Brown from the Philadelphia Eagles. After leading the team in receiving last season, Diggs could find himself as the No. 3 option—a luxury that would make this trio arguably the best in the league. When your third receiver is a proven star, your offense is in an enviable spot.

For now, all eyes are on No. 8—and whether it will soon be back on the field for New England.
