Michigan running back Micah Ka'apana is out for the 2026 season with a lower leg injury, according to head coach Kyle Whittingham.

Michigan football's spring practice momentum hit a significant snag this week, as new head coach Kyle Whittingham delivered some tough injury news. Whittingham confirmed that sophomore running back Micah Ka’apana will miss the entire 2026 season due to a lower leg injury.

"One big downer, Micah, our running back, Ka’apana, is out for the season, lower leg injury," Whittingham stated. "It’s unfortunate, but so far we’ve been healthy other than that. The expectation is he’ll return for the ’27 season, but he is gonna be out for the ’26 season."

This is a tough blow for a young player still carving out his role. While Ka’apana's on-field production has been limited—totaling 38 rushing yards over two seasons—he had shown flashes of potential that the coaching staff was eager to develop further. His absence creates a depth challenge in the running back room, highlighting the physical demands and unpredictable nature of the sport where a single play can alter a season.

Despite this setback, Whittingham emphasized that the overall tenor of spring camp remains overwhelmingly positive. With ten practices down and five to go, the team is progressing well under new schemes on both offense and defense.

"It’s been a very productive first 10 practices. A lot of positives, offense is progressing, defense is progressing," Whittingham said. "Everything’s on track to where you would hope it would be. The guys are working hard, really haven’t had a bad practice."

For Ka’apana, the focus now shifts to a long rehabilitation process with the goal of a full return in 2027. For the Wolverines, the next man up mentality takes hold as they continue building towards the future, a testament to the resilience required at every level of football.
