Dakota Guerrant, the standout 5-star prospect from Harper Woods, Michigan, is one of the most highly sought-after recruits in the class of 2027. With him expressing a desire to stay home, in-state Michigan has been looking to get the crown jewel to Ann Arbor.

The battle for elite in-state talent is heating up in Michigan, and the Wolverines might be on the verge of losing a major prize to a Big Ten rival. All eyes are on Dakota Guerrant, a 5-star wide receiver from Harper Woods, Michigan, who is widely considered one of the crown jewels of the 2027 recruiting class.

Guerrant, the No. 1 ranked player in his home state and the No. 8 receiver nationally, has made no secret of his desire to stay close to home. That has put the Michigan Wolverines in a prime position to land him—at least on paper. However, momentum appears to be shifting toward Eugene, as the Oregon Ducks have emerged as the clear frontrunners in this recruitment.

According to Rivals' Steve Wiltfong, "This young man's at the top of their board regardless of position. Dakota Guerrant... has spent a lot of time around Oregon, including a return trip this spring, and the Ducks continue to lead on the Rivals prediction machine, including my forecast."

That's a significant statement, especially considering that Guerrant holds offers from roughly 50 programs nationwide. While Michigan is making a strong push under Kyle Whittingham's new staff—with Kylie Allen reporting that the Wolverines are hitting a "full-court press" down the stretch—Oregon has built a relationship that is hard to ignore.

"Coach Douglas, Coach Lanning, Coach Merringer, and company have him very excited about a potential future playing inside Autzen Stadium," Wiltfong added.

Guerrant's junior season stats are nothing short of spectacular: 55 receptions for 1,074 yards and 26 touchdowns. That kind of production has made him a priority target for some of the biggest programs in the country.

The Ducks have already hosted him for over six visits, and his most recent trip to Eugene included his family—a strong signal of how seriously he is considering the program. But the Wolverines aren't without their own family ties. Guerrant's cousin, Jacob Oden, is already on the Michigan roster, giving the Wolverines a built-in connection. Plus, Michigan has been recruiting him since Sherrone Moore took over the program, and the proximity advantage is undeniable: Harper Woods is a short drive from Ann Arbor.

Distance, however, could be a deciding factor. The trip from Harper Woods to Eugene is roughly a 37-hour drive or an eight- to ten-hour flight with a layover. That's a long way from home for a player who initially wanted to stay in-state.

As the recruiting cycle heats up, this is shaping up to be one of the most intriguing battles in the 2027 class. Will family ties and proximity win out, or will the Ducks' early investment and consistent presence seal the deal? For Michigan fans, the answer can't come soon enough.
