In a groundbreaking move that's sending ripples through the sports world, Kwanza Jones is poised to shatter a major barrier in Major League Baseball. The accomplished investor and philanthropist is set to become the first Black woman majority owner in MLB history, marking a pivotal moment for diversity in professional sports.
A Princeton University graduate with over a decade of investment experience, Jones has built an impressive resume serving on multiple boards and leading impactful initiatives. Since 2014, she's co-founded and served as CEO of the Kwanza Jones & José E. Feliciano Initiative, a philanthropic organization and private family office that has directed more than $250 million toward education, entrepreneurship, equity, and empowerment.
The historic opportunity comes as the Seidler family, who have owned the San Diego Padres since 2020, have agreed to transfer majority ownership to Jones and her partner, José E. Feliciano. The team, valued at approximately $3.9 billion according to Sports Illustrated, has been on the market since November, and this deal represents a new chapter for the franchise.
"I'm thrilled that after a highly competitive process, Kwanza Jones and José E. Feliciano will become the next majority owners of the Padres," said outgoing chairman John Seidler. "When I became control person, my goal was to continue building on our recent success in pursuit of a World Series championship for the city of San Diego and our faithful fans. Now, as I pass the baton to Kwanza and José, I do so with full confidence that they share that vision."
The agreement still requires approval from Major League Baseball and must meet standard closing conditions, but the potential impact is already clear. If finalized, Jones wouldn't just be making history as the first Black woman majority owner—she'd be bringing a fresh perspective to a sport that's been actively working to expand its reach and inclusivity.
"The Padres are more than a baseball team; they are a unifying force in San Diego, rooted in community, connection, and belonging," Jones said. "As life and business partners, and as a family, we are honored to lead this next chapter together. We have worked hard for everything we have achieved, and we have built it together. We see that same spirit in this team and its fans."
For fans and followers of the game, this development signals an exciting new era—not just for the Padres, but for what's possible in professional sports ownership. As the deal moves toward final approval, all eyes will be on San Diego, where history is waiting to be written.
