Maverick Viñales' 2026 MotoGP season has been a story of frustration and bad luck, but KTM's faith in the Spanish rider remains unshaken. The factory team is backing him to overcome his injury setbacks and return to form as a vital "second leader" alongside the sensational rookie Pedro Acosta.

Viñales' challenging start, which saw him miss points in the opening rounds, was largely due to a recurring shoulder issue. A screw inserted after his 2025 Sachsenring crash came loose, forcing him to withdraw from the US Grand Prix in severe pain. This was a cruel blow after a promising pre-season where he appeared fully fit and ready to build on his strong 2025 performances.

KTM Motorsport Director Pit Beirer expressed sympathy for Viñales' situation, highlighting the rider's past contributions during a difficult period for the project. "The boy is not lucky," Beirer stated, recalling how Viñales was pain-free and smiling during the Sepang test, only for the mystery shoulder weakness to return. The issue was finally traced to the moving screw, a frustrating complication for both rider and team.

Despite the setbacks, KTM's long-term vision for Viñales is clear. Originally signed to be a cornerstone of their post-Acosta era, he was slated for a factory seat alongside Alex Marquez in 2027. The team still believes he can fulfill that potential and become a consistent front-runner. For now, the focus is on getting Viñales fully healed and back on the bike, ready to prove that his and KTM's championship ambitions are very much alive.
