In a move that has left cricket fans in Bengaluru disappointed, the iconic M. Chinnaswamy Stadium has lost the rights to host the IPL 2026 final to Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium. The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) has responded with a mix of frustration and defiance, insisting they were fully prepared to host the marquee event.
The BCCI confirmed the venue shift on Tuesday, citing "certain operational and logistical considerations" as the reason. However, the KSCA claims it was never formally told why Bengaluru was passed over. "Specific reasons were not formally communicated to us," the association stated in an official note, expressing "disappointment that the IPL playoff matches have been allotted to other centres."
The KSCA revealed that former India pacer and current KSCA president Venkatesh Prasad had personally been in touch with the BCCI, formally conveying the association's "preparedness, willingness, and keen interest" in hosting the playoffs and final at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. The stadium has a strong track record of hosting high-profile matches, including IPL playoffs in previous seasons.
The BCCI's official statement, issued by honorary secretary Devajit Saikia, noted that Bengaluru was originally designated to host the final but was shifted due to "certain requirements from the local association and authorities that were beyond the scope of BCCI's established guidelines and protocols." The KSCA, however, defended its operational record, suggesting their arrangements this season met all necessary standards.
For cricket fans, this is a tough pill to swallow. Bengaluru has long been a passionate hub for the sport, and the Chinnaswamy Stadium is known for its electric atmosphere during IPL matches. The shift to Ahmedabad continues a trend of major finals being hosted at the world's largest cricket stadium, which has become a preferred venue for the BCCI in recent years.
As the debate over venue selection continues, one thing is clear: the KSCA is not going down without a fight, and Bengaluru's cricket faithful will be hoping for a fairer shake in future seasons.
